Fingerprinting: the current rule

From 17 December 2025 through 31 December 2026, short-term visas for stays of 180 days or less are exempt from fingerprint collection — so the whole process can be handled by mail, with no visit to the visa centre.

Long-term categories that lead to a residence permit — work (Z), study (X1), and D, J1, Q1, S1 — still require the applicant to appear in person for fingerprinting. Applicants under 14, over 70, and diplomatic passport holders remain permanently exempt.

This exemption has a firm end date. If you're planning a trip, it's worth applying sooner rather than later.

Handled personally, start to finish. One-to-one service in Chinese and English.
